Why Solution Focused Coaching?

Solution-focused Brief Coaching (SFBC) is the modern way to improve your mental game. Here’s how it compares to other coaching methods. If you do not qualify for SFBC, other coaching options are available from Dr. Z.

Traditional Coaching

  • Open-ended duration, often lasting months or years
  • Methodical exploratory process
  • Can result in emotional dependence on the coach
  • Requires significant emotional investment and time
  • Progress can be slow and non-linear
  • Not always structured around clear goals
  • Costly over time
  • Best suited for deep-seated or complex issues
  • May create long-term insight without immediate change

SFBC

  • Short-term, typically 6 hours
  • Focuses on present and future solutions
  • Client-led, goal-directed conversations
  • Builds independence and self-efficacy
  • Emphasizes action and measurable change
  • Rapid results often visible within days
  • Highly structured and goal-focused
  • Cost-effective, low hour count
  • Ideal for focused, change-ready clients
  • Collaborative, empowering, strength-based
  • Avoids problem-talk, emphasizes what works
  • Targets small wins to build lasting change

Doing Little or Nothing

  • No commitment = No results
  • Behavior continues unchallenged
  • May lead to poor career outcomes
  • Does not address root causes or behavior patterns
  • Relief may be partial or temporary
  • Focuses on status quo, not skill-building
  • Individual is largely passive in life
  • Emotional insight may be limited
  • May cover up problems rather than resolve them

    Frequently asked questions

Solution-Focused Brief Coaching (SFBC) is a short-term, goal-oriented, evidence-based approach grounded in the principles of positive psychology. Instead of dwelling on problems, SFBT helps you identify and build solutions that move you forward. It’s a practical, future-focused method designed to spark hope, generate momentum, and support meaningful, lasting change—in your behavior, your mindset, and your life.

    1. Mental Health Disorders
      • Clients experiencing severe anxiety or severe depression may struggle to engage in the collaborative and goal-setting aspects of SFBC. In such cases, establishing a coaching dialogue can be challenging, and I will recommend alternative or adjunctive treatments that might be more appropriate.
    2. Clients Unable to Establish a Dialogue
      • SFBC relies on the client’s ability to articulate goals and participate in solution-focused conversations. When a client cannot engage in such dialogue—due to factors like severe ADHD or communication barriers—SFBC may not be effective.
    3. Need for In-Depth Exploration of Past Issues
      • Clients needing to delve deeply into past traumas or underlying causes of their issues may find SFBC’s present and future focus insufficient. Coaching intentionally avoids extensive exploration of historical problems, which might not align with some clients’ personal goals. In this case, I will recommend alternative or adjunctive treatments that might be more appropriate.
    4. Situations Where Coaching Has Previously Been Ineffective
      • If a well-executed coaching program has not yielded desired outcomes, it may indicate that the approach is not suitable for the client’s specific needs. In such cases, alternative approaches will be considered.
    5. Clients Expecting Ongoing Support
      • SFBC positions the client as a problem-solver, with the coach acting as a facilitator. Clients who prefer a less direct approach with ongoing support support may find this model less satisfying.

I offer a six-hour in-person intensive on Fridays, whose itinerary is as follows. We meet at 8am or 9am at Dr. Z’s office or your office, we break for lunch around 11:30 for a half hour (we go to Chick-fil-A together and continue our conversation, cost of lunch is on me), and we complete the intensive after 6 hours, i.e., at 2pm or 3pm (depending on start time). After we agree on a Friday when this will work, my office will set it up and collect the payment by credit card. If you can’t make it on the scheduled day or change your mind, we can reschedule to another Friday or refund your payment.

Alternatively, we meet by video at 8am or 9am, break for lunch around 11:30 for a half hour, and we complete the intensive after 6 hours, i.e., at 2pm or 3pm (depending on start time).

Yes, you may set your own schedule and complete 6 or 12 sessions over a period of time. I recommend that you complete SFBT in 6 to 12 weeks. These plans are available in person at my office in Alpharetta, GA or by video. The fee is $185 per hour and you pay as you go by credit card on file.
