Why Solution Focused?

Solution-focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is the modern way to improve your mental game. Here’s how it compares to other therapy or medication. If you do not qualify for SFBT, other treatment oiptions are available from Dr. Z.

Other Therapy

  • Open-ended duration, often lasting months or years
  • Explores childhood, past trauma, and unconscious patterns
  • Therapist-led, exploratory process
  • Can result in emotional dependence on the therapist
  • Requires significant emotional investment and time
  • Progress can be slow and non-linear
  • Not always structured around clear goals
  • Insurance-dependent and costly over time
  • Best suited for deep-seated or complex issues
  • Therapist often interprets and analyzes behavior
  • Often requires unpacking painful memories
  • May create long-term insight without immediate change

SFBT

  • Short-term, typically 6 hours
  • Focuses on present and future solutions
  • Client-led, goal-directed conversations
  • Builds independence and self-efficacy
  • Emphasizes action and measurable change
  • Rapid results often visible within days
  • Highly structured and goal-focused
  • Cost-effective, low hour count
  • Ideal for focused, change-ready clients
  • Collaborative, empowering, strength-based
  • Avoids problem-talk, emphasizes what works
  • Targets small wins to build lasting change

Medication

  • Requires ongoing intake and dosage management
  • Primarily targets biological symptoms
  • Prescribed by a physician or psychiatrist
  • May lead to side effects or dependency
  • Does not address root causes or behavior patterns
  • Relief may be partial or temporary
  • Focuses on symptom control, not skill-building
  • May require lifelong adherence
  • Best for biochemical imbalances
  • Patient is largely passive in treatment
  • Emotional insight may be limited
  • May mask symptoms rather than resolve them

Frequently asked questions

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a short-term, goal-oriented, evidence-based approach grounded in the principles of positive psychology. Instead of dwelling on problems, SFBT helps you identify and build solutions that move you forward. It’s a practical, future-focused method designed to spark hope, generate momentum, and support meaningful, lasting change—in your behavior, your mindset, and your life.

  1. Severe Mental Health Disorders
    • Clients experiencing acute psychosis or severe depression may struggle to engage in the collaborative and goal-setting aspects of SFBT. In such cases, establishing a therapeutic dialogue can be challenging, and Dr. Z will recommend alternative or adjunctive treatments that might be more appropriate.
  2. Clients Unable to Establish a Therapeutic Dialogue
    • SFBT relies on the client’s ability to articulate goals and participate in solution-focused conversations. When a client cannot engage in such dialogue—due to factors like severe cognitive impairments or communication barriers—SFBT may not be effective.
  3. Need for In-Depth Exploration of Past Issues
    • Clients needing to delve deeply into past traumas or underlying causes of their issues may find SFBT’s present and future focus insufficient. The approach intentionally avoids extensive exploration of historical problems, which might not align with some clients’ therapeutic goals. In this case, Dr. Z will recommend alternative or adjunctive treatments that might be more appropriate.
  4. Situations Where SFBT Has Previously Been Ineffective
    • If a well-executed SFBT intervention has not yielded desired outcomes, it may indicate that the approach is not suitable for the client’s specific needs. In such cases, alternative therapeutic approaches will be considered.
  5. Clients with Intellectual Disabilities Without Appropriate Adaptations
    • While SFBT can be adapted for individuals with intellectual disabilities, it requires modifications such as simplified language and visual aids. Without these adaptations, clients may not benefit fully from the therapy. Dr. Z will recommend alternative or adjunctive treatments that might be more appropriate.
  6. Clients Expecting Supportive Therapy
    • SFBT positions the client as a problem-solver, with the therapist acting as a facilitator. Clients who prefer a less direct approach with therapist-provided support may find this model less satisfying.

I offer a six-hour in-person intensive on Fridays, whose itinerary is as follows. We meet at 8am or 9am at my office, we break for lunch around 11:30 for a half hour (we go to Chick-fil-A together and continue our conversation, cost of lunch is on me), and we complete the intensive after 6 hours, i.e., at 2pm or 3pm (depending on start time). After we agree on a Friday when this will work, my office will set it up and collect the payment by credit card. If you can’t make it on the scheduled day or change your mind, we can reschedule to another Friday or refund your payment.

Alternatively, we meet by video at 8am or 9am, break for lunch around 11:30 for a half hour, and we complete the intensive after 6 hours, i.e., at 2pm or 3pm (depending on start time).

Yes, you may set your own schedule and complete the 6 sessions over a period of time. Dr. Z recommends that you complete SFBT in 6 to 12 weeks. This is available in person at Dr. Z’s office in Alpharetta, GA or by video. The fee is $185 per hour and you pay as you go by credit card on file. Dr. Z’s policies on cancellations applies, and you may review it here: https://drmarkzuccolo.com/about-drz/fees-policies/
